The subtitle of this volume is A Christian Indian of the Cherokee Nation is the story of one of the great success stories from the Brainerd Mission to the Cherokee. The American Missionary Board started this school in 1817 on the banks of the South or Lesser Chickamauga Creek in what is now Hamilton County, Tennessee. Catharine Brown was a young student who came from Creek Path in Alabama to be educated there. Within a couple of years, she returned to her beloved Creek Path and opened her own school for the Cherokee and Creek there. Her father was John Brown and as the Native Americans moved to the west, he was one of their first Chiefs in the west. Her brother even developed a written language prior to the work of Sequoyah. This is a very good story of the life and times of the Cherokee as they were developing from the forest people to a more agrarian culture. Included is a letter written by Catherine back to the Brainerd Mission that did not appear in the original manuscript.
