Ecce homo ("beholdthe man") are the Latin words used by Pontius Pilate in the Vulgatetranslation of the Gospel of John, when he presents a scourged Jesus Christ, bound and crowned with thorns, to a hostile crowd shortly before hisCrucifixion. The original New Testament Greek is rendered by most English Bibletranslations, e.g. Douay-Rheims Bible and King James Version, as "beholdthe man". The scene has been widely depicted in Christian art.
    Behold the Man!
Then Pilatetook Jesus and flogged him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thornsand put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. Pilate wentout again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you mayknow that I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown ofthorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” When thechief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucifyhim!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find noguilt in him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that lawhe ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heardthis statement, he was even more afraid. He entered his headquarters again andsaid to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. So Pilatesaid to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority torelease you and authority to crucify you?” Jesus answered him, “You would haveno authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Thereforehe who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” (John 19:1-11)
