Description

1825/4 (2) B.2 Capped Bust quarter, PCGS G4.  This is a pleasing coin for the assigned grade, but the hook here is the rare die state (or stage, as Tompkins calls it...this is Tompkins Stage 5).  The die has formed a complete retained cud, as seen.  Rea, et all calls this Die State c, Stage 4 and assigns a rarity rating of R6.  This much we know for sure...we find 2 or 3 of the B3 cud (at UNITED) for every one of the arrow cuds.  A very tough coin, and a great coin for the die state (stage?) enthusiast!
If you haven't already, please check out both of the standard works on the Bust quarter series mentioned above.  Steve Tompkins' wonderful effort has been out for a while, but the book more recently published by Rory Rea, et al is also well worth your attention.  Both are monumental works, and - though they cover the same subject - they are actually quite different.  Both have places of honor in our library, and we strongly suggest that both deserve a similar place in yours.  Please Google either for ordering info.
